1. Why did you choose Safety Technology as your major?
I chose Safety Technology because I enjoy the aspects of chemistry and physics and how they are applied to our field every day. Also, I chose this program due to the fact that there are only a small number of schools that offer this degree throughout the entire nation. Another aspect that led me to choosing this major was the job outlook for the future and how it is in high demand. There are so many different fields to choose from so the opportunities seem endless.
2. When did you decide you wanted to pursue that major?
I decided I wanted to pursue the safety technology major my second semester during freshman year. The program was recommended by a friend who had told me a lot about the major and the job opportunities that were available.
3. What influenced your decision?
I was influenced to choose the major due to the fact I had some friends that had already transferred to the program and had given me great feedback about the program. In addition, I was also influenced by how diverse the major was and that I could pretty much be guaranteed a job right out of college.
4. Why did you choose to attend Marshall University?
I chose to attend Marshall University because I could commute to school every day and because the tuition was great. I also had plenty of friends that were attending the university. The beginning of my freshman year was when I actually heard about the safety technology program from one of my previous friends. I was actually in the engineering transfer program at the time planning to transfer to West Virginia University for their dual major in aerospace/mechanical engineering. I researched Marshall Universities Safety program and realized I could not only get more job opportunities, but the salary was just as competitive, and the sky was the limit when it came to job opportunities. The following semester I switched majors to safety technology and have enjoyed it ever since.
5. What has been your favorite Safety Technology class as a student and why?
I would say my favorite safety technology class has been incident investigation. I chose this class because it offered a great learning environment for not only me, but other students as well. In addition, I enjoyed class assignments that gave me real life accidents that have previously occurred throughout the years in which I had to puzzle the steps together to find the root cause of the accident.
6. What do you plan to do after graduation?
After graduation I plan on attending Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where I will major in Human Factors Engineering and Ergonomics. Once completed with my Master’s degree I then have high hopes to work for the National Transportation Safety Board as an investigator.
