American Military Engineers
January 09, 2001
As you may know, we are trying to establish a student chapter of the Society of American Military Engineers on the Marshall campus. The benefits of joining student engineering organizations include regular interaction with fellow engineering students, opportunities to participate in various conferences, competitions, and other activities related to the practice of engineering, and the ability to interact and network with engineering professionals. SAME is a multi-disciplinary engineering organization, and includes many members from non-military organizations, such as consulting firms, industry, and state/federal govern-ment. (In other words, you don’t need to be interested in joining the armed services in order to become a member!) Hosting a student chapter of an engineering organization on campus also provides us with an opportunity to “show-off” our engineering students to other colleges and departments on campus, to other institutions, and to the professional engineering community.
If you are a pre-engineering student, please contact Dr. Bill Pierson to discuss this opportunity. If you would like to learn more about SAME before making a decision, consider attending one of SAME’s monthly luncheon meetings, which are held in Huntington on the second Tuesday of each month, and always include a technical presentation from a practicing engineer. Contact Dr. Pierson for more details on specific meetings.
On a related note, we are in the process of developing some type of common area or study area for engineering students in Gullickson Hall. Stay tuned for more details in upcoming weeks. . . .
Finally, we are planning a summer academy for high school students interested in engineering July 8-13, 2001. Students will stay in Twin Towers, and participate in engineering-related activities throughout the week. If you are interested in helping out with this activity, please let us know. The high school students could really benefit from talking with current engineering students!
