Marshall ASSE Chapter Tours Massey Mining Operations

November 12, 2001

The Marshall University branch of the American Society of Safety Engineers recently toured several of Massey Energy's coal operations. The group visited the Performance Coal Company where they saw a long wall miner in action. They then visited Marfork Coal Company and viewed a preparation plant where coal is refined. They wrapped up the tour by visiting Progress coal company, Massey's largest surface mine. Here are some photos of the Progress visit:

The ASSE members find out what a monster truck really is:

A coal lift dwarfs a nearby bulldozer, truck and the all of the visiting ASSE members.

Each semester, the Marshall ASSE group goes on at least one trip like this one and is in the process of planning the next trip. Anyone interested in joining the group is invited to visit the department of Safety Technology offices in Smith Hall room 212 and talk with the department's secretary Carol Henson. Interested parties may also contact or e-mail her to have their names placed on a mailing list that announces all ASSE activities.
