Marshall University Safety Technology Occupational Safety Option Graduates Participate in Graduate Safety Practitioner Program

Savoy, Illinois-April 28, 2006- Marshall University graduates of the Safety Technology Occupational Safety Option Bachelor's of Science Degree Programs are taking part in the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) program.

The GSP program recognizes graduates from qualified academic programs in safety and currently encompasses graduates from ten accredited safety degree programs. The GSP program begins with Spring 2006 graduations.

Graduates in the GSP program are awarded the Graduate Safety Practitioner designation, receive a waiver of the application fee and the Safety Fundamentals examination (the first of two examinations leading to the Certified Safety Professional® certification), and are recognized as a candidate for the CSP® certification.

"BCSP wants to recognize graduates from ABET-ASAC accredited safety degree programs," said BCSP Executive Director, Roger L. Brauer, Ph.D., CSP, P.E., CPE. "We believe," Dr. Brauer continued, "that having completed a program of study evaluated through third-party procedures is substantially equivalent to passing an examination on the fundamental knowledge essential for professional safety practice."

"The GSP program is a new path to achieving safety certification that recognizes the quality of the qualified academic programs preparing safety professionals for tomorrow's challenges," said BCSP President, Larry Jones, CSP. "The safety profession benefits in that GSPs are introduced to the significance of professional certification earlier in their careers and thus contribute at a higher level of professionalism for a longer period of time."

Qualified academic programs currently include those which hold program accreditation from the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of ABET (ABET-ASAC) for their bachelor's or master's level safety degrees. BCSP has already started working with many of these programs to recognize their graduates with the GSP designation.

ABET-ASAC accredited safety degree programs at Central Missouri State University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Marshall University, Millersville University, Murray State University, Oakland University, Pennsylvania State University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and West Virginia University now qualify.
