Dr. Avinandan (Avi) Mukherjee is Dean of the AACSB-accredited Lewis College of Business and Professor of Marketing at Marshall University, USA. This role entails managing the entire Lewis College of Business as the chief academic, financial, personnel and administrative officer, responsible for faculty, students, curriculum, budgets, and external engagement.
Before Marshall, Dr. Mukherjee was the Dean of the College of Business at Clayton State University in Metro Atlanta, USA. Some of his major accomplishments as Dean include: six new international partnerships; successful five year Maintenance of Accreditation by AACSB International in 2016; new Global Business Advisory Council (GBAC); new Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series with CEO-level speakers on campus; introduction of seven new academic programs including MBA concentrations in Human Resource Leadership, and Sports and Entertainment Management; and record enrollment growth and fund-raising. In 2017, Avi was honored in Atlanta Business Chronicle’s Who’s Who in Education, which included the top 100 education leaders in K-12 and post-secondary education in metro Atlanta.
Before his Deanship, Avi has been the Chair of the Marketing Department in the School of Business at Montclair State University, which is New Jersey’s second largest and fastest growing university. In that role, he led a multi-pronged comprehensive transformation of the department, which resulted in the Marketing Department becoming the largest department in the school by number of programs and number of graduating students.
Dr. Mukherjee has a uniquely international academic and professional background, having taught as full-time or visiting faculty in as many as 16 countries. Dr. Mukherjee has been a full-time faculty member in the United States (Marshall, Clayton State, Montclair State, Penn State), United Kingdom (Bradford), Singapore (NTU) and India (IIM). He has been a visiting faculty at Rutgers Business School, NJIT, INSEAD, Copenhagen Business School, ESC Toulouse, and Kathmandu University, among others. Mukherjee earned his Ph.D. in Marketing at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, India, which is consistently ranked among the Top 50 Business Schools across the world. Part of his doctoral work was conducted at the ESSEC Business School in Paris and his research was affiliated to the International Motor Vehicle Program of the MIT Sloan School of Management. He completed the prestigious ITP program from IMD Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Management and Leadership in Education (MLE) Program from Harvard University.
Avi’s areas of academic interest include Marketing Analytics, Brand Management, Services Marketing, Sustainability and Environmental Management, Digital Marketing, Health Care Management, and International Business. He has taught a wide variety of courses across undergraduate, MBA, Executive MBA, and Ph.D. levels across several universities. He also supervised six doctoral dissertations and was instrumental in launching a uniquely interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Environmental Management at Montclair State University.
Dr. Mukherjee is a co-author of a scholarly book titled “An Integrated Approach to Environmental Management” published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. He has published more than 100 scholarly articles in leading journals such as Journal of Retailing, Psychology and Marketing, European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Business Research, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Communications of the ACM, Journal of Services Marketing, and Journal of Marketing Management, among others. He is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Marketing, a leading peer-reviewed scholarly academic journal, highlighting cutting edge research, new concepts and theories, and fresh practical ideas that can be readily applied in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. Dr. Mukherjee’s published research have been cited more than 3,000 times, with an H-index of 23 (Google Scholar Citation Report) –
Mukherjee has been a member of the Board of Directors of several organizations, including the Clayton Chamber of Commerce in Atlanta, Society for Advancement of Management, and the New Jersey Advertising Club. He was president of the Business and Health Administration Association, and Chair of the Regents Academic Advisory Committee on Business for the University System of Georgia. Additionally, Dr. Mukherjee has directed executive development programs and consulted with companies in USA, UK, Denmark, India, China, Bangladesh, Singapore and Malaysia.
