MODEL COLLEGE PROGRAM The college program for children with Asperger's Syndrome at Marshall University * Please note: Applications for Fall, 2009 must be submitted by February 1, 2009. Please contact Marc Ellison, Program Coordinator, to request the application, and discuss additional information that must be included in the packet.
Personal goals are identified and strategies are developed based on the individual needs of each student. The program seeks to help students learn skills which will help them earn a college degree, work in their chosen field, and live a productive, independent, and quality life. Q: What are criteria for acceptance into the College Program for Students with Asperger's Syndrome? A: The College Program for Students with Asperger's Syndrome admits students who are diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome or high functioning autism, have intellectual ability ranging from at least average to superior and who can understand and interact with college level material. Participating students must have required independent living skills and be motivated to contribute as full partners in their college-based positive behavior support programs . In addition, participants must be admitted to Marshall University.
Q: My testing does not state that Asperger's Syndrome or high functioning autism is the primary diagnosis. Should I still apply to the College Program for Students with Asperger's Syndrome? A: The College Program for Students with Asperger's Syndrome is designed to assist only students with a primary diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome or high functioning autism. Documentation of the diagnosis from a physician or licensed clinical psychologist is required.
Q: Is an interview required? A: Yes. An interview with The College Program for Students with Asperger's Syndrome staff is required.
Q: If I am accepted to the College Program for Students with Asperger's Syndrome, does it mean I am automatically admitted to Marshall University ? A: No. Separate applications are required for the College Program for Students with Asperger's Syndrome and Marshall University . Students are responsible for applying to each program.
Q: What kind of services does the College Program for Students with Asperger's Syndrome provide? A: A positive behavior support approach is used to assess each student's needs and develop appropriate academic, social and life skills supports. Students meet regularly with College Program staff and their positive behavior support teams to monitor progress, develop “to-do” lists and identify new goals.
Q: What is the cost for the College Program for Students with Asperger's Syndrome? A: The fee for The College Program for Students with Asperger's syndrome is $3200 per semester. This cost is in addition to tuition, room and board, student activity and other customary fees charged by Marshall University . Full payment for The College Program for Students with Asperger's Syndrome is due prior to the beginning of each semester.
