Positive Behavior Support Trainer

The West Virginia Autism Training Center at Marshall University has an opening for a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Trainer/Educational Specialist to serve families of children with autism spectrum disorders in the northern part of the state.

Main Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conducts family-centered planning activities

  • Assists in the development and implementation of family support plans

  • Facilitates small teams focused around a specific individual with autism

  • With team input, designs individualized support plans for target students      

  • Provides instruction and guidance for family-focus PBS support teams

  • Provides lecture presentations on PBS and special topics related to autism

  • Works with assigned PBS support team to modify support plans as needed and prepares written follow-up reports

  • Prepares written reports of project results for presentations and publications in professional journals and newsletters

     

Job Specifications

Education: Masters Degree in Special Education or a related field

Experience: Over three years teaching experience of students with autism and/or    autistic-like characteristics. Prefer public school experience and experience working directly with families

Knowledge/Skills: Excellent written and communication skills. Knowledge of behavior analysis, positive behavior support,  psychological and/or developmental assessment techniques. Knowledge of experimental research designs. Excellent facilitation skills and ability to work well with a team.

Travel: Travel is required for this position. Travel does not typically require overnight stays. Mileage to and from training and meetings is reimbursed.

Part Time Abstractors for the WV Prevalence of Autism Study

The West Virginia Autism Training Center at Marshall University has several openings for part time, flexible work for a study on the prevalence of autism in West Virginia. West Virginia is one of 8 states that is working collaboratively with The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is part of the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) network.

Abstractor responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Data Collection – Going out into the field to abstract records for the Autism Prevalence Study

  • Data Entry – Entering collected data into the database for analysis using Microsoft Access ARCHE database.

  • Travel – Travel to and from abstraction sites is a requirement.  Travel time is paid for and mileage to and from the site  is reimbursed. 

Requirements:

Education – Minimum of a Bachelors degree in Psychology, Special Education,   Social Work, Communication Disorders, or a related field.

 Experience – Experience working with individuals with an autism spectrum disorder is preferred along with a general knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of these disorders.

 Knowledge/Skills/Abilities – Good written and oral communication skills; knowledge of data management software such as Microsoft Access and Excel; commitment to working as a team member.

Community Partner

Reports to: Principal Investigator/Executive Director and Project Coordinator/Associate Director of Training 

General Function: Provides community support and training assistance to families with children with autism or pervasive developmental disorder, NOS. Participates in the development of family futures plans and family support plans. Provides ongoing family support.   Characteristic duties and responsibilities include: 

  •  Works with assigned families on the development of family futures plans and family support plans.
  • Participates in small group team work with assigned family.
  •  Assists assigned families in the home and the community to implement individualized strategies and techniques developed from the family support plan.
  • Assists families to identify community resources and supports.
  • Provides in-home and community follow-up service for assigned families.
  • Documents client contacts, writes progress notes and summary reports. logical research. 

Education: No educational requirement. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Must have a child with autism or pervasive development disorder, NOS and must be a current client of the West Virginia Autism Training Center. Must have received formal parent training for at least four months from the Autism Training center or another agency. Must have familiarity with the basic principles and techniques of behavior analysis. Must be familiar with basic data collection procedures. Must have knowledge of available surrounding community resources and support system. Must be will to share personal family experiences with others and to provide support and training assistance to other families who have children with autism or pervasive developmental disorder, NOS. Must be able to prepare written summaries of activities and other required program documentation. 

Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience, which provides the applicant with the knowledge/skills/abilities listed above, may be substituted.

Clinical Psychologist

Salary: Salary dependent upon qualifications and experience. 

Job Description: The Autism Training Center at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia seeks applicants with strong clinical and research interests in developmental disabilities emphasizing pediatric Autism Spectrum Disorders. We are seeking a full range of candidates, including recent doctorates as well as individuals with professional experience. Candidates will be judged on their potential for achievement as well as their accomplishments.

Preferred candidates must have knowledge of experimental and quasi-experimental design and quantitative data analysis. Knowledge of SPSS and Microsoft Access essential.

Additional duties include:

  • Conducting pre and post-test assessments of research subjects;

  • Diagnosing autism spectrum disorders in multiple settings including a new Autism Spectrum Disorder screening and diagnosis collaborative;

  • Collaborating on ongoing prevalence research as well as new research projects

Teaching possibilities exist.
