Have
you ever spent hours working on your web site? Have you spent hours
formatting reports and documents for online distribution? Have you ever
been frustrated because your web pages look better in Internet Explorer
than they do in Netscape? If you can answer yes to any of these
questions, then the Adobe Acrobat Reader is the solution to your
problems!
The
free
Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 5.0), which is available for download at the Adobe
Corporation's web site allows you to view Adobe Acrobat files, also
known as PDF files. PDF files are created using Adobe Acrobat and
are viewed using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader. The main
advantage of using PDF files for document distribution is that anyone
can open your document (as long as they have installed the free reader)
and it will look exactly as you intended - with layout, fonts, links,
and images intact.
Students,
faculty and staff at Marshall University can create their own PDF files
by using the PDF Scanner in the 24 hour Drinko Library. This scanner
creates PDF files and then will e-mail them to you. The machine is
simple to use, and the student assistants at the help desk will be happy
to assist you.
Working
with a PDF file
These instructions apply to version 4.0 of the Adobe
Acrobat Reader.
The PDF file used for this tutorial is the Spring
2001 edition of the COEHS Newsletter.
While
PDF files can be distributed in any number of ways, including e-mail
attachments, floppy disks and CD-ROMS, they are normally distributed
through web sites. If you wish to view a PDF file from a web site,
simply click on the provided link and the file will open in your web
browser window. You can perform a number of functions including printing
the file, copying text and searching for text within the document.
The
screen capture below provides an example of how a PDF file will look
when opened in a web browser window. Explanations of the most used
features follow.
