Dr. Loretta Long Impacts Tri-State Area During Her Visit
By Dr. Jane McKee, COEHS Associate Dean for Academic Programs

02.28.2001: Dr. Loretta Long, familiar star of one of the most beloved of all television shows, Sesame Street, spent a week at Marshall University as the Visiting Scholar in the Teacher Lecturer Program of the College of Education and Human Services. Dr. Long, or Nurse Susan, as she is better known to her television audience, charmed the Tri-State area during her numerous appearances.

During the week of February 19-23, Dr. Long met with children, parents, students, teachers, principals, teacher candidates, university faculty and staff, and community members. The response was the same--an overwhelming feeling of happiness and love for a television show that has not only taught children to read but also taught them the lessons of life. Adults brought countless items of priceless value for Dr. Long to see and to sign. These artifacts ranged from books to record albums to Sesame Street toys.

The typical comment was "I grew up watching you on Sesame Street!" Dr. Long called them her "First Generation" Sesame Street children. Others spoke about the impact of Sesame Street on their lives during difficult times in childhood. When Dr. Long showed excerpts from Sesame Street during her public performance, the joyous reaction was the same from adults, college students, and children.

Dr. Long brought the message: We all are different. We all are the same. She encouraged children to read because "Readers are leaders." She spoke in a subtle and moving way about the diversity that Sesame Street has brought to our living rooms since 1969 and reminded us of the world of color and light in which we live. All those who came in contact with Dr. Long during her week as Visiting Scholar came away with a greater awareness of the diversity of the world, the diversity of our country, and the diversity within each of us.
