MEMORANDUM
The United States Department of Education has notified the West Virginia State Board of Education that designated areas of General Education, Special Education, and Administrative/Support have been accepted as shortage areas for the 2000-2001 school year. Those designated areas are:
Borrowers who had an outstanding Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) on July 1, 1993 and hold assignments in these areas are eligible for deferment of loan repayment under the Federal Stafford and Federal Supplemental Loans for Students (SLS) programs anytime within the life of the borrower's loan(s). In addition, this designation allows Douglas Scholars to qualify for reduction of teaching obligation under the Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarship Program. I am requesting that you encourage persons who might be eligible for these deferments to contact 1-800-4FED-AID (for Federal Stafford/SLS borrowers) or Michelle Wicks at (304) 558-4618 (for Paul Douglas Scholarship recipients). Ms. Michelle Wicks is the Interim Scholarship Programs Coordinator at West Virginia Higher Education Central Office.
