Teacher Lecturer Series A Success

11.08.2002

The Fall 2002 Teacher Lecturer Series in the College of Education and Human Services has ended. Associate Dean Dr. Jane McKee, feels that the program once again provided our teacher candidates with the opportunity to interact with an outstanding minority educator.

Jayshree Shah, Biology Teacher at Fairland High School explained the process of inquiry through her demonstration, "Teaching All Students Through Inquiry." Ms. Shah's program marked a departure from the traditional lecture style approach used by previous Teacher Lecturers. Students attending the four programs were led through inquiry-based activities.

ABOUT THE TEACHER LECTURER PROGRAM

Because of a lack of minority educators, both in public education and higher education, teacher education candidates often lack role models who possess valuable information about educating minority children. At a time when the percentage of minority students
in the public school population is growing at a rapid rate, this information is crucial for success for all children.

The purpose of the Teacher Lecturer Program is to enable teacher education candidates to interact with minority teachers and to hear of their experiences in education, especially experiences dealing with effective teaching in the public school classroom. The Teacher Lecturer will also interact with College of Education and Human Services faculty.

As part of the Critical Thinking conceptual framework of the School of Education,
teacher candidates and faculty are asked to look at multiple perspectives on teaching and learning. The Teacher Lecturer offers a unique perspective that allows participants to examine the ideas of the speaker along with their own beliefs and practices.
