What is Exercise Physiology?
Exercise physiology is a branch of physiology that is concerned
with the scientific study of how the physiological systems (e.g., neuroendocrine, neuromuscular,
cardiovascular etc) of the human body respond to acute and chronic exercise. It is a
multi-disciplinary field with strong ties to biological sciences, chemistry, physics, and
medicine with application to clinical and normal populations. Research questions are addressed
by utilizing both human and animal models.
The mission of the Division of Exercise Science, Sport, and Recreation in regards to the B.A. in
Physical Education with a concentration in Exercise Science, is to prepare students to become
professionals through excellence in teaching, research, and service, so that they may encourage
enhanced performance and quality of life for all citizens through active lifestyles,
prevention/rehabilitation services, and lifetime physical activity. The undergraduate program
includes study in biology, chemistry, physics, human anatomy and human physiology, kinesiology,
exercise physiology, energy metabolism, and evaluating fitness programming.
