Masters of Arts in Reading Education
Plan of Study Masters of Arts in Reading Education
The Masters of Arts in Reading Education consists of six
foundation courses, four advanced courses, including two practicum
experiences and a capstone experience, and two elective courses
for a total of 36 credit hours.
Requirements of Admittance
An undergraduate GPA of 2.5: A valid WV teaching certificate;
completion of (GRE) Graduate Record Exam (general test) or Miller
Analogies Test (MAT) with a score of 400 or above on the verbal
section of the GRA or a score of 30 on the MAT; completion of
self-evaluation of dispositions; and completion of diagnostic test
related to reading knowledge and skills. If these requirements are
not met then admittance may be granted on a provisional basis.

**Candidates must apply for and complete a pre-practicum
assessment, a second self-evaluation of dispositions, as well as
any resulting follow-up requirements before taking advanced-level
courses.

Electives
Two Courses 6hrs
*Candidates with advisors approval, can select courses that
support the reading specialist role. The course can be within the
literacy education program (e.g. CIRG 613, CIRG 613) or courses
may be from a different program such as curriculum and
instruction, counseling, psychology, etc. Elective may be taken at
any point.

Portfolio
**At the completion of the pogrom, a comprehensive portfolio
evaluation will serve advisors and faculty as the indicator of
programs completion, although portfolio examination may be
conducted throughout the program for various purposes. Portfolio
evaluation will be based on rubric scoring. A third and final
self-evaluation of dispositions will also be conducted.
Program Disclaimer: All completed course work included as a
part of a plan of study must not exceed seven years at the time of
graduation. Transfer credit must be requested and approved within
the first semester of acceptance into the program, and transfer
credits from outside of the program may not exceed 12 credit
hours. All students seeking licensure must pass the appropriate
PRAXIS licensure exam. Students must initiate application for
graduation by the published deadline in the semester they expect
to graduate. Failure to return the signed plan of study within 30
days will automatically indicate acceptance. Plan of study must be
completed on all admitted degree students within the first
semester of enrollment. The literacy education program of MUGC
reserves the right to update or revise this plan of study as
necessary.
