The Birke Art Gallery is a venue which is valuable to students in two significant ways. First, it offers the developing artist the opportunity to interact with the work of professionals in the field and to listen to presentations concerning craft and concept by the exhibiting artist. Second, it serves as an exhibition space for the students – annually in the form of the Student Juried Exhibition and, for graduating seniors and graduate students, individual and group shows as part of the Capstone Experience.

Stanley Sporny Paintings
8/17 - 9/10
Reception: Sept. 1, 5 - 8 pm
Stanley Sporny spent his life as an artist, teacher, mentor, inventor, musician, entrepreneur and a true visionary. Erika Osborne
9/14 - 10/8
Reception: Sept. 14, 5 - 8 pm
Erika Osborne received her BFA from the University of Utah in painting and drawing and her MFA from the University of New Mexico. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, locally, nationally and internationally. Her work has been highlighted in regional publications along with national art magazines such as Art Papers, Sculpture Magazine and Southwest Art Magazine.
24th Annual Student Juried Exhibition
1/18 -2/4
Reception: 1/24 Sunday, 2 - 4 pm. Awards, 3 pm
In a great juried exhibition there is a little something to suit everyone's personal aesthetic. It is a place one can visit for recognizable, palatable staples; however, the viewer may also encounter something a little less familiar and, in this way, begin to broaden one's own visual sensibilities. The 24th Annual Student Juried Exhibition has blossomed into a highly successful and rewarding juried contest—a terrific opportunity for budding student artists to showcase and promote their finest artwork. The exhibition offers students a glimpse into the world of the professional artist and a real life experience in self-promotion and exposure.

Birke Fine Arts Symposium
Social Justice: Art in a Time of Change
2/23 - 3/18
Reception: 3/11, 6 - 9 pm. Awards, 7 pm
In 1979, Mrs. Helen Birke and her daughter Julie established an endowed fund to support the Birke Fine Arts Symposium. Under the leadership of the College of Fine Arts, the Departments of Art and Design, Music, and Theatre, and the Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts collaborate to offer a multidisciplinary symposium every four years. This spring, the Department of Art and Design will hold a juried exhibition, Social Justice: Art in a Time of Change. The juror, Mark Hosler, is best known for his “illegal” collage and appropriation-based audio and visual works with the group Negativland. Students enrolled in Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia colleges or universities are invited to use their skills and experiences to create art that informs, educates, arouses indignation and moves the viewer to action.
