Art 299 Portfolio Review

Spring 2008: Mar 3 - 7

After completing foundations courses, students in the Department of Art & Design must submit their portfolio for faculty review. This process occurs once each semester. You should select your best work from each class and prepare it for professional display (matte or mount 2D work, small 3D work will need pedestals and ephemeral work - video, multimedia etc. - should have explicit instructions for viewing). Your work will exhibit for one week on the 6th floor of Smith Hall.

Please contact Claire Sherwood if you have any questions.

General Information

  1. Areas will be delineated on February 29th; each student will have an assigned area to display their work. Work must be up by 5:00 pm Monday March 3rd. Students may see faculty for help or advice prior to the review and can ask for feedback while installing. Make sure you come equipped with proper hanging materials (clear thumbtacks, matted work, typed labels, name and desired major.
  1. The majority of work exhibited should be from your foundation courses: Art 214, 215,217,218 and 219.  3-4 works from each class should be displayed from each class depending on available space.  The work should be the best work you did in those classes as evidenced by your grades and in consultation with your instructors. You may exhibit work from other classes but the majority of your work should be from foundation classes.
  1. If you are a transfer student you should exhibit work done in classes that were the equivalent to our foundation courses or work completed at Marshall thus far.
  1. All work must be professional presented. It is suggested that 2D work be matted or mounted unless the work is very large.  All work should be displayed to its best advantage.  Work should be clean, without folds or tears, fingerprints or stains.  Work should be well organized in the display area; neat and level, using the space to its best advantage.  If possible, group work from each class together. You will need to label all work shown with the class in which it was completed.
  1. 3D work may be presented either free standing, on a pedestal or in a photograph that is a minimum of 6x8”. If you chose to present a photograph of your sculpture it must be taken against a neutral background and you should present multiple photographs showing different viewpoints.
  1. The review by all full time faculty will take place from Tuesday March 4th- Friday March 7thth. Students must not interfere with faculty while they are completing the review forms.
  1. Work may be removed beginning after 5:00 pm on Friday March 7th. All work MUST be removed by the following week. All nails, screws, staples and other hanging devices must be removed from the display panels and pedestals or stools return to the proper place.
  1. The results of the review may be picked up from the Chair, Byron Clercx, or any foundations committee faculty member one week after the review. Check your email for announcements and make appointments to speak to someone to obtain your results.
  1. Students are required to complete the review with a “pass” to accomplish this every student must
    1. Have earned a “C” or better in Art 101,214,215,217,218 and 219
    2. Participate in the foundations review in compliance with the instructions above.
    3. Receive an overall score of 15 or better (see attached faculty evaluation form)

Re-Submitting Portfolios for Review

If you are re-submitting a portfolio for the faculty to review make sure you know what specific areas to focus on (drawing, sculpture, design or all of the above).
Make an appointment to review your previous results with the Chair of the department or another faculty member before you submit your portfolio.

Each student may re-submit a portfolio for review until they reach the studio credit limit of 27 hours. If you have not passed a portfolio review and have already reached the maximum number of studio credits you will need to meet with the Chair of the department and the foundations committee to discuss your options/future in the Department of Art and Design.

Re-submitted portfolios are reviewed in a separate space announced during the portfolio review. You are not required to hang your work but you must still present all work professionally. A good option is to enclose all matted/mounted artwork in a hard portfolio clearly labeled with your name, the studio classes you have completed and your desired major.

You should not submit the same work previously submitted for Art 299.  Sign up for new classes that will improve your weak areas, work with professors to create new work that is appropriate for the review and work independently to create artwork that shows artistic growth and technical development in a your medium of your choice.
For example: if on your first review you were told you needed to improve compositional layout, drawing ability and color theory, you could take another drawing class and submit work completed in that course. If it is your desire to become a graphic design BFA major along with your drawings, you could present graphic design work that shows your ability to compose and use color in an interesting and well-informed manor.
