Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much money should I/the student bring?

A: While no money is needed for meals, housing, and transportation, you may want some "extras," like ordering out in the evening or buying souvenirs in NYC.

Marshall's campus supports a "points" system, much like a prepaid debit card. You can add money to your ID to use at the laundry facilities, the bookstore, many of the vending machines, and the cafeteria. It is up to your discretion as to how much you would like to put on the card. Unused money can be returned. Check out our information on Herd Points.

Vending machine articles run, on average, from $0.50 to $1.00.

Laundry: According to Marshall "We have laundry facilities in each of our Residence Halls. For most halls there is one washer and one dryer per floor. In Marshall Commons there is one facility located on the first floor with six washers and six dryers. If you pay using coins it is $1.25 to wash and $0.75 to dry. If you pay using your Student ID card it's only $1.00 to wash and $0.60 to dry. "

NYC: Any amount is up to the discretion of the participant and her parent(s) or guardian(s).

You are responsible for any funds you bring with you!!!

Q: What do you mean by "nice, casual clothes?"

A: Think "Church clothes" or "Dress Casual." We ask that the students also bring some "nicer" clothes for when GSA is out on the town. No jeans, cutoffs, or anything ripped or sloppy. Boys, think khaki's or nice pants, Girls think skirts or nice slacks. Please refrain from anything overtly tight or revealing. Be comfortable, but if you have to err, err on the side of conservative.

There are some instances where khaki shorts are appropriate, but we ask that you not make this your only option.

Girls, don't wear any shoe/heel you are uncomfortable walking in!

The mentor dinner is NOT casual - please bring dress clothes for that event.

Q: To what address can mail be sent?

A: For more information on how to contact your student, check out our Keeping in Touch page

Q: Will the students have access to email?

A: The short answer is "yes," however, the students will have very limited time for activities like checking email. You shouldn't depend on e-mail as a regular form of communication.

Q: How do I know what my student is up to?

A: Via the website! Keep checking for daily updates, pictures, feedback, updated schedules, etc.
