THE COMPETITION
As part of the Birke Fine Arts Symposium, this spring the Department of Art and Design at Marshall University will host a juried exhibition, Social Justice: Art in a Time of Change. Full-time undergraduate and graduate art majors enrolled in Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia colleges or universities are invited to use their skills and experiences to create art that informs, educates, arouses indignation and moves the viewer to action. Submissions may address issues like social, cultural, political, or environmental injustices and may be completed in any visual media.

THE JUROR
Mark Hosler, of Marshall, NC, is a founding member of the group Negativland. Since 1980, Negativland has been creating records, videos, and live performances using appropriated sound, image and text. Taken mostly from corporately owned mass culture, Negativland rearranges these bits and pieces to make them say things they never intended to. Hosler has written essays for Billboard Magazine, College Music Journal, NYU Law Commentator, and others. He has lectured at numerous universities including Yale, Cranbrook Academy of Art and MIT, as well as various venues nationally and internationally. He was the keynote speaker at the 2004 Allied Media Conference, spoke at the Regional Conference to End Corporate Dominance, and spoke as part of the alternative events during the Republican National Convention in
Philadelphia.
