Marshall Theatre Alliance – 2012 Season of Shows

The Crucible

By Arthur Miller
October 10 - 13 at 8PM
Joan C. Edwards Playhouse

How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!

Arthur Miller’s parable of mass hysteria draws a chilling parallel between the Salem witch-hunt of 1692 and the McCarthyism which gripped America in the 1950s. The story of how the small community of Salem is stirred into madness by superstition, paranoia and malice is a savage attack on the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations.

The Arabian Nights

by Mary Zimmerman
November 7 – 10 / November 15 – 17 at 8PM
Francis-Booth Experimental Theatre

And the nights over Bagdad were whiter than the days; the nights over Bagdad were white…

Mary Zimmerman’s award winning adaptation weaves tales of wonder into a poetic testament to the transformational power of storytelling. King Shahryar marries, loves, and then kills a young woman each night – until he encounters Scheherazade. For one thousand and one nights, he delays her murder as he eagerly awaits her next tale of love, betrayal, courage, ingenuity, human folly and physical sensuality.

Doubt

by John Patrick Shanley
February 20 - 23 / February 28 – March 2 at 8PM
Francis-Booth Experimental Theatre

…conviction is a resting place and doubt is infinite – it is a passionate exercise.

What do we know? When do we know it? And are we ever certain of anything? Set in a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, this highly acclaimed drama examines the intersections of doubt, truth, and faith. Sister Aloysius is certain that young Father Flynn has “made advances” toward the school’s first and only African-American student and sets out in search of the truth.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

music and lyrics by Stephen Soundheim
book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart
April 24 - 27 at 8PM
April 28 at 2PM
Joan C. Edwards Playhouse

…something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone – a comedy tonight!

This classic musical takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from the time-tested, 2000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of vaudeville in its prime. The result is a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan for his young master, in exchange for his freedom.

“A play should make you understand something new. If it tells you what you already know, you leave it as ignorant as when you went in.”
