The Department of Theatre maintains active membership and participation in all of the major regional and national organizations dedicated to the development and enhancement of theatre education and the preparation of students for a successful life in the professional theatre.

 

The College of Fine Arts and the Theatre Department provide up to $10,000 per year to help support student participation in these organizations and auditions.

 

The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF), Region 4

Marshall University students and faculty have received dozens of Awards of Merit in the areas of acting, technology and design. University Theatre productions are entered into KCACTF and each February our department actively participates in the Region 4 Festivals. Professor, Jack Cirillo was named 2009 KCACTF, Region 4, Teaching Artist of Performance.

 

United States Institute for Theatre Technology, Inc. (USITT)

The mission of USITT is to actively promote the advancement theatre technology in America, and to network with the finest theatres and theatre training programs in the nation. Our students and faculty attend annual USITT conventions held throughout the nation.

 

The University/Resident Theatre Association (U/RTA)

The University/Resident Theatre Association (U/RTA) is the country's oldest and largest consortium of professional theatre training graduate programs and associated professional theatres. U/RTA provides a variety of services, management, and informational programs and encourages the professional training of artists and of future teachers in the performing arts. Graduating seniors MAY participate in U/RTA conventions and auditions as they prepare for entry into the nation's finest theatre graduate programs.

 

Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE)

ATHE actively supports scholarship through teaching, research, and practice. Faculty and students members may participate in ATHE conventions (first week of August) and programming to further enhance their work as theatre education professionals.

 

The American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE

The American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE) is a national association of theatre educators and students who hope to become theatre educators. Annual conferences of AATE provide members with exceptional opportunities for further developing their skills and approaches as professional artist/educators.

 

Mid-America Theatre Conference (MATC)

Mid-America Theatre Conference convenes every year in March at a different mid-American city.  Topics/presentations and workshops range from playwriting to theatre pedagogy, from theatre management to theatre history.  Undergraduate papers are accepted and encouraged.

Southeastern Theatre Conference, Inc. (SETC)

Southeastern Theatre Conference is the largest and most active regional theatre organization in the country. SETC has as its purpose to provide services and educational programs for those individuals and organizations engaged in theatre in the southeast. Each spring, the Conference brings thousands of university students, teachers, theatre professionals and high school students together for auditions, interviews, and workshops.

 

Unified Professional Theatre Auditions

 Professional and pre-professional auditions are held on the first weekend in February in Memphis Tennessee.  The auditions provide an opportunity for young talent to meet, audition and/or interview with a large number of production companies and theatres in one convenient location.  Candidates must register for UPTA by the end of November.  In recent years many of our graduating students have found opportunity and employment working for theatres and companies that were part of the UPTA audition weekend.

 

University/Resident Theatre Association (URTA)

Each winter the University/Resident Theatre Association holds a series of auditions and interviews involving hundreds of the country's outstanding undergraduate and advanced theatre students. There is a November deadline of applications for MFA Graduate school auditions/interviews for performance, design, directing, stage management, technology and theatre management.  In lat January and early February, the National Unified Auditions and Interviews are conducted in New York City, Chicago and Las Vegas, with candidates coming from around the world. Candidates interested in acting, design (scenic, lighting, costume, sound), directing, theatre technology, stage management, playwriting and theatre management, are provided the opportunity to vie for numerous positions with graduate schools, and for seasonal employment with summer theatre companies, Shakespeare festivals and other professional producing organizations. Membership in U/RTA is NOT required for students to participate.
