Theatre Performance Major

Driving Miss DaisyThe Marshall University Theatre performance program (BFA degree) takes the conservatory approach to actor training.  Particular emphasis in voice, speech, movement, dance and acting develop students to become versed in both classical and contemporary acting approaches as well as to prepare them for the rigors of the acting profession itself.  Careful attention is paid to the practical side of the “business” as well, and students are challenged regularly in audition techniques as well as business/career management.  All performance majors are required to participate in Marshall University Theatre’s varied and challenging production season of four main-stage plays as well as numerous experimental and classroom projects.  As a part of the curriculum, all theatre majors are required to fulfill an internship obligation that will create useful and unique bridges to professional theatre.  Connections are created at several theatre conferences that the department promotes during each academic year, such as: The West Virginia Theatre Conference, The South East Theatre Conference, and the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival. It is expected that upon graduation students will be equally qualified to pursue either advanced MFA actor training or an entry level acting position in the realm of the professional theatre.
