FACULTY PROFILE: CURRENT RESEARCH

Dr. Wendy Williams
(Ph.D. University of California, Santa Cruz)

Wendy R. Williams is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department. She received her PhD in Social Psychology from the University of California—Santa Cruz and joined the Marshall University faculty in 2005.  She regularly teaches courses on Social Psychology and the Psychology of Women and Gender, and her research focuses on social class, poverty, and inequality. One line of research examines the lived experiences of poor and working-class Americans, including individual and situational factors that affect perceptions of classist discrimination, how low-income people manage multiple identities (e.g., being a women, a low-income person, or a person of color), and what factors lead to the political mobilization of low-income individuals. Her second line of research examines the correlates and consequences of how low-income people are perceived, including media representations of low-income individuals and how perceptions of economic inequality affect support for anti-poverty programs. She is currently a Faculty Fellow through the NSF funded MU-ADVANCE program.
