Student Profile: Meet Camilla Stine Overup, Psychology
I am a senior Psychology major,
with a minor in Biology. I am from Køge, Denmark and came here to
swim on the Swimming and Diving team here at Marshall, while still
getting my education; an accomplishment which is hard to do in
Denmark, as there are no athletics in connection with university.
This spring I was awarded the Research Scholars Award, as well as
being appointed one of this year’s SURE grant recipients, which is
giving the opportunity to continue the research I am currently
conducting with Dr. Paige Muellerleile and a group of other students
at Marshall. Furthermore, I am going to a national psychology
conference in Chicago to present the work we have done so far. After
graduating in May, 2009, I plan on going to graduate school
somewhere in America, as opposed to going home to Denmark. There are
many reasons for this; one being that I really like it here and
actually feel more at home than I do in Denmark. Also, it seems like
there are more opportunities than in Denmark, when it comes to what
you want to specialize in and research. Currently, I am considering
specializing in Social Psychology, something that was very
unexpected to me, because I have always been very interested in the
biological aspect of behaviour. But through my work with Dr.
Muellerleile, I discovered a hidden curiosity for how our thoughts
and feelings about ourselves and others influence our behaviour and
life and I now love to observe people and look at the interactions
that occur between people.
