Student Advising Policy (Undergraduate)
In order to insure that students follow the program which is most appropriately tailored to their individual needs and goals, it is important that all students meet with their advisors at least once each semester.  The following policy is designed to facilitate the advising process, and to insure that both students and advisors have adequate time to review the students’ program and make appropriate decisions.

Planning Meeting

As soon as possible after the student has received notification of admission to the Department of Communication Disorders, he/she should contact the assigned advisor and set up an appointment.  If no advisor has been assigned, the student should contact the Department so that an assignment can be made.

At the first meeting, the advisor and student will plan a comprehensive program based on the student’s long-term objectives.  UNLESS SPECIFICALLY STATED BY THE ADVISOR, THIS MEETING SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED THE ADVISING CONFERENCE FOR THE FOLLOWING SEMESTER.  In some cases, if no further information is needed and at the discretion of the advisor, this planning meeting may also serve as the first advising conference, in which case the advisor will give the student permission to enroll in specific courses.

Advising Conferences

Following the planning meeting, students will need to meet with the advisor at least once each semester to discuss the next semester as well as to review and update the comprehensive plan as needed.  Graduate advising is typically done prior to the university publication of the schedule of classes.  The CD department will post a list of the departmental offerings for the next semester (in advance of the university publication) as well as the dates for graduate advising.  It is the student’s responsibility to note the posted schedule and meet the posted deadlines.  In order to remain in good standing in the Communication Disorders program, each student must make an appointment to meet with the advisor prior to registering and PRIOR TO THE POSTED DEADLINE.  At that conference, courses will be approved for the next semester.  Students may not register for any CD course until they have been advised for that semester and have been given permission to register for that course.  Students who register prior to receiving permission will be withdrawn from the course.  Graduate students who plan to take practicum must schedule appointments prior to the deadline for practicum applications.

Students who are attending graduate school part time or who are currently on inactive status also must set up an appointment to meet with the advisor each semester prior to the posted deadline in order to remain in good standing in the program.  At the discretion of the advisor, the advising conference may in some instances be conducted by phone.  However, it is the responsibility of the student to arrange to come to campus by the specified deadline if the advisor determines that a telephone conference will not be adequate.

Advising Conferences for Fall Semester

At the discretion of the advisor, advising for both summer and fall semesters may be done during the spring semester advising conference.  If the advisor determines at that time that sufficient information is available to make a decision about fall, permission to enroll in fall courses will be provided.  Students who receive permission to enroll for fall during the spring conference are not required to meet with the advisor during the summer term.

Summer Advising

If the advisor determines during the spring conference that additional information will be necessary in order to make decisions about fall courses, OR if a change in the student’s circumstances indicates that modifications in the student’s fall schedule would be appropriate, the student must arrange to meet with the advisor during the summer.  Since most faculty members work only during part of the summer, students needing advising are responsible for contacting the advisor early in the summer to determine when the advisor will be available for a conference.  Under no circumstances will advising conferences be held outside of the regular summer terms unless arrangements have been made with the advisor IN ADVANCE.

Students who fail to schedule and attend advising conferences by the appropriate deadline may not be assured of receiving permission to enroll in courses during the following semester.
