Mission

The mission of the Scottish Rite Childhood Speech and Language Program at Marshall University is to provide comprehensive services to children with communication disorders, without regard to race, creed, or a family’s ability to pay.

The Scottish Rite Childhood Speech and Language Program at Marshall University was founded in March 2002.  It is provided as part of the Marshall University Speech and Hearing Center.  Contributions can be made to the Scottish Rite Foundation.

Imagine being unable to communicate with those around you.  Imagine being unable to use speech and language to express your needs - or to communicate wonder, love, frustration.  Imagine a child being unable to understand what people are saying, unable to talk to his parents, unable to make friends, or unable to respond when called upon in school.  These problems are often very real for children with speech and language disorders.

Speech-language disorders affect approximately six million children in the United States.  In some cases, these disorders are associated with other disabilities such as mental retardation or cerebral palsy.  But in many cases, communication disorders occur in children with average or above average intelligence who have no other disability except difficulty understanding language and expressing themselves.

The importance of early identification and treatment for these children has been clearly demonstrated.  The chances of a child with a communication disorder achieving his or her maximum potential are much greater if the child receives help at an early age.
