Grading Scale

A = 90% or (553.5 pts +)          B = 80% (492-553)       C = 70% (430-491)       D = 60% (369-429)

Find your grade percentage by dividing the total points you've earned by the total points possible.

You can do that at any point during the semester to determine exactly where you stand at that point.

The grade points have been distributed among the course's four segments.

Do your best to perform well in all four segments.

Welcome to the class!!!

CLASS EXPECTATIONS AND TIPS TO DO WELL

Class lectures/discussions are planned with your speeches and exams in mind

  1. It is highly recommended that you bring your textbook to EACH class period.  We will be referring to the textbook and/or the workbook in almost all class periods.
  2. Read the chapters before you come to class.
  3. Participate in class - ask questions and answer questions the instructor asks you.
  4. Don't forget to bring a VHS videotape to record your speeches on the nights you're speaking.
  5. Keep track of the grades you earn on each assignment by writing them down on the grade sheet
  6. Stick to the outline format presented - it is the only way you can learn the formula you can use again and again to succeed in public speaking.
  7. Any behavior/object that disrupts the learning process/environment will not be accepted.  Be considerate of your classmates and of me.
  8. Please turn off all cell phones and pagers while in class.
  9. Discrimination/sexual harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.
  10. Make-up work will be allowed at the professor's discretion.  I will not even consider allowing you to make up a missed speech/exam without a signed doctor's excuse.  If I did, it wouldn't be fair to the students who were prepared, on time and showed up.  DO NOT MISS on the night you are scheduled to speak or take an exam.  If you're sick, call me before class to let me know and bring in a doctor's excuse the next class period IF YOU WANT TO TRY TO MAKE UP THE SPEECH/EXAM YOU MISSED.
  11. If you will be absent from class for university-related reasons, you will know this ahead of time and it is up to you to make the appropriate arrangements with me, such as rescheduling exams and speeches.
  12. If you are absent from class on any night that a written assignment is due and you have a viable reason for missing class, I will expect to receive the assignment by e-mail (attach it to the e-mail message as a Microsoft Word document OR if you don't have Word, just type the entire assignment into the body of the e-mail message.  I will accept it no later than 24 hours from the missed class.
  13. No hats are to be worn when speaking.
  14. No chewing gum when you are speaking in front of the class - spit it out before you go up front.
  15. Dress business casual for the speech nights.
  16. Even if you're not scheduled to speak on speech night, come to provide your classmates with an audience.  Part of your self-analysis grade includes the peer reaction forms – you help provide each other with points by completing the peer reaction forms for your classmates.
  17. Do not get up to leave the room when someone is speaking - if you have to take a break or head to the restroom - wait until the person has finished his/her speech.  If you are late to class on a speaking night, or if you are returning from the restroom, look through the glass in the door to see if someone is speaking - if so, wait until he or she is finished before entering the room.
  18. Respect the speaker:  don't talk to your classmates when someone is speaking.
  19. Keep this syllabus and refer to the explanation of assignments each time you're working on an assignment.
  20. Ask questions.
  21. Schedule an appointment with me outside of class if you have concerns.
  22. Have fun!
