Course Description: This course is designed to enhance the development of critical thinking skills and their application to verbal and nonverbal interaction in interpersonal and public communication contexts. This course is a general requirement of Marshall University and is worth 3 credit hours.
Course Philosophy and Course Objectives are detailed on pp.1-2 of the Student Workbook.
Attendance: Attendance is not required but is strongly encouraged for success in this course. However, attendance will be mandatory on speech performance days. Points will be deducted for each day missed during speeches because this is a speech class and a speech can’t be given without an audience. Points may also be given to those students who have great attendance records. It is also advisable to keep up with weekly readings and be prepared to participate in class.
Cell Phones: Please turn off all cell phones when coming to class, especially on speech performance days. Cell phones are disruptive in a class room setting and unfair to fellow students. Let me know before class if you are expecting an important call so an arrangement can be made. Also, no texting during class please!
Tardiness: I understand that there will be occasions where students will be late, but please don’t make a habit of it and do your best to make it on time. If you arrive late on a speech presentation day, please wait outside until the student presenting is finished. DO NOT interrupt a student while they are giving a speech.
Make –up/ Late Work: For every day an assignment is late I will take off 10 points, which means your assignment will drop a letter grade. Speeches cannot be made up unless there has been a death, accident, family emergency, or severe illness. I also reserve the right to ask for a valid document stating the reason you missed your speech/presentation. (See WB pg. 2).
Assignments: No handwritten assignments will be accepted (unless completed in class). All assignments must be typed and stapled or 10 points will be deducted from that assignment grade. Do Not e-mail me your assignments unless you have received permission from me. Also, please make sure that the ink color and font are appropriate.
“Policy for Students with Disabilities: Marshall University is committed to equal opportunity in education for all students, including those with physical, learning and psychological disabilities. University policy states that it is the responsibility of students with disabilities to contact the Office of Disabled Student Services (DSS) in Prichard Hall 117, phone 304 696-2271 to provide documentation of their disability. Following this, the DSS Coordinator will send a letter to each of the student’s instructors outlining the academic accommodation he/she will need to ensure equality in classroom experiences, outside assignment, testing and grading. The instructor and student will meet to discuss how the accommodation(s) requested will be provided. For more information, please visit http://www.marshall.edu/disabled or contact Disabled Student Services Office at Prichard Hall 11, phone 304-696-2271.”
Please Read the Plagiarism Policy, Video Recording Policy, Requirements, and Grades information in the Student Workbook on pp. 2-4.
