Fundamentals of Speech Communication Student Workbook 11th Ed., R.B Bookwalter.
A blank mini- DVD disk will be required. Please use DVD+RW (blue cover).
Course Description: This course is designed to enhance the development of critical thinking skills and their application to verbal and nonverbal interaction in interpersonal and public communication contexts. This course is a general requirement of Marshall University and is worth 3 credit hours.
Course Philosophy and Course Objectives are detailed on pp. 1-2 of the Student Workbook.
Attendance Policy: Attendance during lecture days is not required but recommended for your success in this course. However, any class activities and pop quizzes can not be made up if a student misses a lecture day. Also, if you have not read the chapter and plan not to participate please do not waste class time. No presentations/speeches can be made up (unless there is an emergency-see “Make-Up/Late Work”). Attendance during speech days is mandatory. The rhetorical situation can not occur without a speaker and an audience. Points will be deducted for each day missed during speeches.
Cell Phones: Please turn off all cell phones (or at least put them on vibrate) when coming into class. All cell phones must be turned off or silenced during any presentations. It is very distracting to be delivering a speech to be interrupted by a ringtone. If you are expecting an important phone call please let me know before class. Let’s keep the distractions to a minimum. Do not get up and leave for a phone call during any presentation!! No texting during class time. If cell phones become a problem I may ban them all together.
Tardiness: I understand that there are various reasons why you could be tardy to the classroom but please try your best to be on time. Tardiness on day of presentations will not be accepted. If you arrive late and notice that a fellow student is giving their presentation/speech, then please wait outside of the classroom until they are finished. Any information you missed because you were late for class must be obtained from a fellow classmate. Do not come up to me and expect me to catch you up on work that you missed.
Make-up/ Late Work: For every day an assignment is late I will take off 10 points. Your assignment will drop a letter grade. No work will be accepted after a week from the due date. Speeches cannot be made up unless there has been a death, accident, family emergency, or severe illness. A valid document (University-Excused) stating the reason you missed your speech/presentation will be needed before the speech can be made up. (See WB pg2).
Assignments: No handwritten assignments will be accepted (unless completed in class). All assignments must be typed and 10 points will be deducted if you turn in a handwritten assignment. All papers must be stapled. E-mailed assignments will not be accepted unless previously arranged with me. If you should have a problem with your printer please bring your flash-drive to show me that your assignment has been completed. Also please make sure that the ink color and font are appropriate. No colored printer paper please.
Learning Disabilities: “Policy for Students with Disabilities: Marshall University is committed to equal opportunity in education for all students, including those with physical, learning and psychological disabilities. University policy states that it is the responsibility of students with disabilities to contact the Office of Disabled Student Services (DSS) in Prichard Hall 117, phone 304 696-2271 to provide documentation of their disability. Following this, the DSS Coordinator will send a letter to each of the student’s instructors outlining the academic accommodation he/she will need to ensure equality in classroom experiences, outside assignment, testing and grading. The instructor and student will meet to discuss how the accommodation(s) requested will be provided. For more information, please visit http://www.marshall.edu/disabled or contact Disabled Student Services Office at Prichard Hall 11, phone 304-696-2271.”
