Additional Attendance Policy information:

Occasional tardiness is frowned upon, but understandable.  Three tardies will result in a marked absence.

Attendance for this course is not mandatory, but is necessary to succeed.  The lessons build on the previous work, and if you are absent from class, you will be missing a piece of the puzzle.  Application activities will be completed during class time, some for points - some not,  however if you are absent, you are not eligible for those points.

Each student is allowed 2 unexcused absences.

Any student with perfect attendance will receive 10 bonus points at the end of the class. (Yes you may still have 2 unexcused.)

Notifying the instructor of your absence prior to class does not entitle you to an excused absence. Excused absences are only given for those reasons approved by Student Services.

There are NO MAKEUP EXAMS unless you have a University Excused Absence.

Attendance is required for every student on days that speeches are given.  You must actively participate as an audience member.  A 2 point deduction will be given for unexcused absences on speech days.

General Class Rules:

Disrespect towards classmates or the instructor will not be tolerated.  If it occurs you will be asked to leave the class.

Cell phones should be off or on silent during class, not on vibrate.

In order to cut down on distractions: Avoid leaving the classroom if possible. Arrive at class on time and stay until the end of class. Do not pack up early.

If you come to class late and a student is speaking, DO NOT ENTER THE CLASSROOM UNTIL THE SPEECH IS FINISHED.

All assignments must be typed. NO HANDWRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS. Do not email me your assignments unless you have received specific permission from me to do so.

If you want comments on an assignment feel free to turn it in early. Do not wait until the morning an assignment is due to ask for comments.

Copyright law states that an audio or video clip that you use, but do not own the rights to, can not exceed 20 seconds in length.  Therefore any video or sound clips that you include in your speech presentations cannot exceed 20 seconds.  Also, the correct copyright information must follow the clip or be displayed somewhere during the presentation - otherwise this is considered plagiarism.

Only one (1) audio or video clip is allowed per speech.  No clips should be used during the Introductory or Ceremonial speeches.

Notices:

If you have a need for special services, are part of the HELP program, or you have a disability, please see me after class. Last minute accommodations will not be made.  The sooner you let me know, the sooner I can accommodate you! Please let me know ASAP. I will use the utmost discretion.

At midterm freshman students will receive D & F notifications at the address kept on file at MU.

Marshall's "Policy for Students with Disabilities":

Marshall University is committed to equal opportunity in education for all students, including those with physical, learning and psychological disabilities.  University policy states that it is the responsibility of the students with disabilities to contact the Office of Disabled Student Services (DSS) in Prichard Hall 117, phone 304.696.2271, to provide documentation of their disability.  Following this, the DSS Coordinator will send a letter to each of the student's instructors outlining the academic accommodation he/she will need to ensure equality in classroom experiences, outside assignments, testing and grading. The instructor and student will meet to discuss how the accommodations requested will be provided.  For more information, please visit http://www.marshall.edu/disabled or contact DSS by phone.

Make-up or Late Work:

If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to get the notes and  makeup work.  Please don't expect me to send out an email informing you of what you've missed.  If you have an excused absence, your work must be turned in the day of the next class meeting.  If you absence is unexcused, I still accept late work, but a 10% deduction is taken for each class period that passes from the time the assignment was due to the time I receive your work

Please feel free to contact me anytime you need clarification or assistance.  I am here to help you with any questions, problems, or concerns that you have with this course or another course.  If you keep up with your work in and out of class, you will pass with no problems.  I wish you all the best of luck, and my door is always open!    ~ Sarah
