Doctorate earned at Ohio University--June 1979.
Joined the Marshall faculty in August, 1970; retired from full-time teaching in May 2008.
 
Received the Marshall University Distinguished Service Award in 2007.
Granted Emeritus status in May 2008.
 
 
Dr. Edmunds is a native West Virginian who earned his BA from Marshall University and an MA from Ohio University.  Dr. Edmunds has been involved in higher education for the pas 38 years, employed at Marshall for 27 years with an intermediate sojourn for 11 years at Georgetown College, Georgetown, KY.  While at Marshall he was the Coordinator for Program Review and Assessment with the Office of Academic Affairs.  Additionally, he served as the Chair of the University Assessment Committee, Chair of the General Education Committee, and Liaison to the College of Education and Human Services for the Communication Education program.  For a number of years he was a Yeager Scholars Professor in the Arts and History Seminar.  He has also team-taught a number of seminars in the Honors program with other distinguished faculty.  After completing his tenure with the Program Review and Assessment Office he was appointed as the Interim Chair of the Communication Studies Department.  He continues to teach part-time for the Honors Program, the Communication Studies Department and University College.  His teaching interests have included courses in Communication Education, public speaking, persuasive communication, film history, and listening.

Outside the University he was active with the Higher Education Policy Committee and served as Marshall’s representative on the Assessment Committee.  Dr. Edmunds has been very active with the National Communication Association for the past 36 years.  He has been a member of the NCA Communication Assessment Division for the past 20 years and has been the Division Secretary for the past 12 years.  In 2002, he received the NCA Communication Assessment Division award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Communication Assessment. He has presented several papers and chaired several panels at recent NCA conferences.  He also attended numerous conferences of the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges, contributing a paper entitled “Sustaining Assessment Momentum Between Site Visits,” with Karla Sanders, Eastern Illinois University in 2006.

Dr. Edmunds is involved in community activities.  He serves on Board of the Madie Carroll House Preservation Society as its treasurer; he is a member of the Executive Board of the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center; he is Dean of the Huntington Chapter of the American Guild of Organists; and, he is President of the Huntington Theater Organ Project, Inc., which owns and maintains a theater organ at the Keith Albee Performing Arts Center.  Bob was appointed to the City of Huntington Historic Preservation Commission in 2007.
