Required Text: Public Speaking, Strategies for Success 5th Ed., Zarefsky

Fundamentals of Speech Communication Student Workbook 11th Ed., Bookwalter

Required Media: Mini DVD (DVD+RW)

Course Description: This course is designed to enhance the development of critical thinking skills and their application to verbal and nonverbal interaction in interpersonal and public communication contexts.

Attendance: Attendance is mandatory for all students on “speech days”. There will be 1 point subtracted from your final point tally for each absence on these essential days. During regular class periods, each student is permitted 2 absences throughout the semester. You are expected to turn in any assigned work prior to or on the day of your intended absence. Again, 1 point will be subtracted from your final point tally for each additional absence.

Make-up Work: Students will not be permitted to make-up any course work without a sufficient university excuse. The course schedule provides each assignment and due date. This allows students to know exactly what and when something is due, giving each student plenty of time to complete all assignments.

Tardiness: Come to class and be prepared to work at 8:00 or 9:00am. On speech days, DO NOT enter the room during another student’s speech. Please be courteous enough to wait until he or she is finished.

Late Assignments: Full potential of points are given to those assignments that are submitted on time. Late assignments will be accepted up to 3 days after the assignments’ original due date. However, 1 point per day will be subtracted for each day that the assignment is late.

Typed Assignments: The only hand written assignments you will turn in will be pages from your workbook. Any and all other assignments must be typed.

E-mail Assignments: I will accept your assignments via e-mail on an “as needed” basis, but I do need to be notified beforehand.

Classroom Conduct:

·         Food and/or drink are permitted as long as you are not disturbing the class and you clean up after yourself.

·         Please do not get up and leave the room during a student’s speech unless it is an emergency.

·         NO CELL PHONES!

·         Feel free to chime in during lectures, discussions, exercises, etc.

·         Respect your classmates.
