Iconicity of Symbols

Bethany Phillips and Shannon Smith are seniors in the Communication Disorders program at Marshall University. Bethany and Shannon are doing an independent study in the area of augmentative and alternative communication. They are studying the iconicity of symbols and how people understand concepts when there is not a picture related to it. The procedures for their study involve creating a questionnaire that assesses people’s receptive understanding of symbols. Participants will be shown both concrete and abstract symbols and asked to choose a symbol that they believe best represents a word, concept, idea, or action.
