Freshmen

Freshman are students with 0 to 26 overall credit hours. Transfer hours are included in your overall hours. Freshman are required to speak with an academic advisor each semester before registering for classes.

In order to complete a degree within four years it is important for a you to closely follow your chosen major's curriculum guide. The curriculum guides are recommended course schedules designed to help you remain on track.

HINT: Use it your curriculum sheet as a checklist and update it each semester.

Mandatory Advising

Freshmen students have mandatory advising each semester. You must speak with an advisor before pre-registration so your advising hold can be removed. An advising hold placed on your record will prevent you from registering for classes. The best time to see an advisor is before the pre-registration rush.

Students may drop in to see an advisor at the Office of Student Services is located in the Room 214 Science Building. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Students will be seen on a first come basis.

Don't wait till the last minute to see an Academic Advisor.

Preparing for an Advising Visit

Please bring the following:

  1. A tentative class schedule.

    • Schedule of Course booklets and Schedule Adjustment Forms are available in the Office of Student Services or outside the Registration Office in Old Main.

  2. A list of questions you may want to ask.

  3. If you already have a schedule or partial schedule, bring a detail copy of it with you. Available on myMU.

bullet Map out courses several semesters in advance to ensure pre-requisite requirements are fulfilled
bullet Register for courses that will satisfy your major and the Marshall Plan requirements
bullet Refer to the Schedule of Courses for important dates and deadlines
bullet Refer often to your curriculum guide and the Undergraduate catalog
bullet Begin discussing academic major/minors with professors during their office hours
bullet Average 32 credits for the academic year
bullet Get involved with student organizations and campus activities

Student Responsibilities

bullet Accept full ownership for his/her decisions and actions.
bullet Prepare for advising sessions and bring appropriate resources or materials.
bullet Follow through on actions identified during each advising session.
bullet Become knowledgeable of and adhere to institutional policies, procedures, and requirements.
bullet Evaluate the advising system, when requested, in order to strengthen the advising process.

Academic Advisors assist students in:

bullet Developing course schedules which consider the student's academic and career goals.
bullet Understanding the academic requirements by the College of Sciences and Marshall University.
bullet Understanding Marshall University's policies and procedures
bullet Establishing academic and career goals.
bullet Finding resources to help students with academic or personal difficulties.
