We're here to help your son/daughter achieve their educational goals. The Office of Student Services promotes undergraduate students' collegiate and personal growth by providing an understanding of

	the academic programs offered by the College of Science,
	course offerings,
	tips for achieving academic success so students remain on track for graduation,
	the College of Science's and Marshall University's policies and procedures,
	resources available at Marshall University to students, and
	career opportunities.

Academic Advisors assist students in:

	developing course schedules which consider the student's academic and career goals,
	understanding the academic requirements the College of Sciences and Marshall University,
	understanding Marshall University's policies and procedures ,
	establishing academic and career goals, and
	finding resources to help students with academic or personal difficulties.

In addition to academic advisors, you son or daughter will be assigned a Faculty Advisor who will assist the student with career directions.

Student responsibilities are to

	accept full ownership for his/her decisions and actions;
	prepare for advising sessions and bring appropriate resources or materials;
	follow through on actions identified during each advising session;
	become knowledgeable of and adhere to institutional policies, procedures, and requirements; and
	evaluate the advising system, when requested, in order to strengthen the advising process.

Parents can assist their child by

	assisting your young adult in discovering his/her strengths and weaknesses;
	encouraging him/her to establish strong relationships with Academic Advisors and faculty;
	maintaining open communication about grades and academic progress;
	supporting your young adult efforts to be academically successful
	celebrating your young adult victories; and
	encouraging him or her to seek out help when difficulties arise.

Confidentiality

Unfortunately, the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act prohibits College of Science faculty and staff from releasing information to parents concerning their child’s grades, class attendance or performance, grades, or other specific. We understand that you may be paying for your son or daughter to attend Marshall however, as a public institution, please understand we cannot and will not release confidential information. Academic advisors are happy to answer parents' general questions about Marshall University and the College of Science’s policy and procedures, resources, and academic programs. We strongly encourage all students to discuss their academic progress with their family.

If a student would like his or her advisor to be able to speak directly with his or her parent, the Office of Student Services has a "Consent to Release Information" form that the student may sign. This form will be kept in the student’s file for the College of Science use only. This form does not apply to other Marshall University offices, faculty, or staff.

Full-time and Good Academic Standing

Maintaining full-time status (12 credit hours per semester) is often important for health insurance coverage and eligibility for financial aid/scholarships.

Contact your health insurance provider and the Office of the Registrar (304/696-6410) for enrollment verification.

Contact Financial Aid for the rules concerning scholarships and financial aid.

Grades

Grades are not mailed out. The student must log-on to myMU to receive his or her final grades. Only Freshmen receiving a D or F at mid-term will be mailed a letter concerning his or her grades.

Orientation/Open House

The College of Science encourages all new students and their families to participate in Orientation. During Orientation, the student will be able to meet with his/her academic advisor and register for Fall classes. To schedule an Orientation date, contact the New Student Orientation Office (304/696-2354 or 800/438-5392).

The College of Science hosts Open House at various time through the year. Contact the Dean's Office (304/696-2372) for more information and dates.

Student Health Services

The Student Health Service is located at the Marshall Medical Center at Cabell Huntington Hospital. The Student Health Service is designed to treat acute illnesses. Services are delivered by the Department of Family and Community Medicine, a division of the School of Medicine. Operating hours are from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and it is closed Saturdays, Sundays, and on school holidays. The Student Health Service encourages students to make appointments for treatment, but will treat students on a walk-in basis. Marshall University recommends that all students carry medical insurance in case of serious illness or injury.
