Transfer Students

Transferring from another Marshall college

Student wishing to transfer from another Marshall college must a C or higher in MTH 127 (or MTH 130) and ENG 101, or meet the ACT or SAT requirements stated above.

Transferring from another Institution

Marshall University requires transfer applicants to have a 2.00 Overall GPA on all college work attempted and must be eligible to return to the institution from which they wish to transfer. The evaluation of all transfer credit is completed by the Admissions Office and must be done before students are permitted to register for courses at Marshall University.

You should have received a conversion of credit printout (a “Transfer Equivalency Worksheet”) from the Admissions Office. This is an important document as it details course by course the Marshall equivalency of the classes you completed at other institution(s). This conversion printout along with your College of Science curriculum guide can help you determine what requirements you have completed and still need. Please bring this conversion sheet with you when meeting with an Academic Advisor for the first time.

Advising

Transfer students should speak with an advisor before pre-registration. The academic advisor will assist you in evaluating your transfer credit and how these credits will count toward you College of Science major.  The best time to see an advisor is before the registration rush.

Students may drop in to see an advisor at the Office of Student Services is located in the Room 214 Science Building. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Students will be seen on a first come basis.

Preparing for an Advising Visit

Please bring the following:

  1. A copy of your unofficial Marshall transcript (inside Marshall) or Transfer Equivalency Worksheet (outside Marshall).

  2. A list of questions you may want to ask.

Understanding Your Transfer Equivalency Worksheet

Unclassified (UNC) Credit

Some of your coursework from other institutions may be listed as “Unclassified” or “UNC”  or 1XX, 2XX, 3XX or 4XX on the conversion of credit form. This means that Marshall does not offer the equivalent course of the one taken elsewhere. However, if you provide a course description and/or syllabus, you may be able to receive credit for individual courses. You will need to contact the College of Science Department Chair or other Department Chairs and get written permission of the how the course will be accepted for credit. Emails (with the marshall.edu extension) from the Chair to one of the College of Science Academic Advisors will suffice.

Upper and Lower Division Credits

Upper division credit is received from classes numbered 300 – 499. Lower division credit is received from courses numbered 100 – 299. In order to graduate, you must receive at least 48 hours of upper division credits.

On your conversion of credit form some of the equivalent Marshall classes may have upper division course numbers (300 – 499), but this does not necessarily mean that you have received upper level credit for that course. If the course was a lower division (000 – 299) credit at your previous institution, it will count as a lower division credit at Marshall even though your conversion of credit form lists the course as upper division credit.

For example, at the previous school you took a MTH 200 level class. This 200 level class converted to a 300 level Marshall equivalent course. Because it is a lower division credit at your previous institution it will be considered as a lower division credit at Marshall. The credit for this particular course does not count toward the 48-hour upper division requirement.

On your conversion of credit form, an asterisk (*) to the left of the course title indicates that this particular course is counted as upper division credit. No asterisk indicates lower division credit.

Level Subject Course Title Cr. Hours Grade Explanation of Credit
01 ECN 250 *Prin Microeconomic (ECN 325) 3.00 C Student took ECN 325 at XU that transferred to MU as ECN 250. The asterisk (*)indicates that the student will receive upper division credit for this course at Marshall
01 UNC XXX Unclassified
(ENGL 124)
3.00 B Student took ENGL 124 at XU that transferred to MU as UNC (unclassified). This course does not count toward graduation.
01 HST 342 American Legal (HIST 133) 3.00 A Student took HIST 133 at XU that transferred to MU as HST 342. There is no asterisk (*) so class will count at lower-level credit.
01 PSC 309 Fund Internat Rel (POLI 277) 3.00 B Student took POLI 277 at XU that transferred to MU as PSC 309. There is no asterisk (*) so class will count at lower-level credit.
