Advising
Let's start the discussion of Advising with three pieces
of advice.
-
There is a difference between
Advising and Schedule Advising. You should see your advisor early in the semester
for advising about your major and career. For schedule advising, you should fill out a
department Advising
Sheet (see below) and attend one of the group advising sessions offerred by the
department for scheduling of next semesters classes. These two things are really different.
-
If "Somebody" tells
you something about your requirements to graduate and it is not a CJC Advisor,
COLA Advisor, or the Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts,
verify the information with your assigned advisor.
-
Every
Criminal Justice and Criminology Major has an Advisor assigned to them. If you don't
know who your Advisor is, go by the College of Liberal Arts Office, Old Main 107 and ask.
They will tell you who it is. Another way to check is to log in to your MyMU
account. Your currently assigned advisor will be listed there under
your academic information. Then, go and meet your Advisor.
She/he can help you avoid a lot of pitfalls in your college career and
can help ensure you graduate with the required courses.
Advising
If
you are a Freshman, Sophomore, or on probation, you must see a CJC Advisor (via
one of the group advising sessions)
before registering each semester. The advisor will need to remove your advisor
hold before you can register for courses. The group advising sessions
will be held throughout the registration period. Specific dates and
times will be communicated by email to all CJC students, as well as
announcements through fliers and in class.
Credit
Evaluation
When you become a Junior, you will contact the College of Liberal Arts and ask for a
Credit Evaluation by the COLA Academic Advisor
(696-2350). To ensure that you have your Junior Evaluation, the COLA
Office places a registration hold on you that will only be released when
you have completed your Junior Evaluation. During the Evaluation,
the College Academic Advisor will review your academic
record and complete a sheet with the remaining requirements for you to
graduate.
Use this sheet and your Advisor to make sure you will
complete all requirements to graduate. You should have your evaluation checked again when you
become a senior. You also should have your evaluation checked again when when
you register for your final semester's classes. You should register for
classes, pay your graduation fee at the Bursar's Office, and then take a copy of
your receipt to the College of Liberal Arts Office in Old Main 107. When
you do this, the College's Academic Advisor will do a final check of all of the
classes you have taken and are proposing to ensure that you will graduate.

Hints

You often need letters to go to law
or graduate school or get a job. You Advisor can be one of these
references if they know you.
-
To Graduate, you need to: (1) take
a Capstone Course (CJ 404 or 423); (2) complete the CJ Writing Requirement;
and (3) complete a Capstone Experience of a three hour Internship, 135
hours of Volunteer Service to a Criminal Justice Agency (approved by your
advisor and verified through
letter), or have 135 hours of professional criminal justice work experience
(verified by a letter). Acceptance of the hours for the Capstone
Experience is determined by your Advisor.
-
Some CJ courses are only offered once
a year. See your Advising Sheet and your Advisor to find out when
these are offered.
-
Few CJ classes are offered during the
summer.
-
Join something productive (e.g., LAE, APS, Student
Government, etc.). It will keep you
involved , so that it will look good
on your resume.
-
Look at your Advising
Sheets for more hints and information. Print one below and keep
it current.
-
Registering for
classes online is very easy, but some students, especially first
time freshmen, can be intimidated by the process. Here is an
excellent 11 minute demonstration video that takes you step-by-step
through the process:

Advising
Sheets
Your
advising sheet is determined by the date you declared Criminal Justice as your major with the College of Liberal Arts (actually filed your request with
their secretary).
If you have any questions about which catalog you should use to determine
your graduation requirements, contact the College of Liberal Arts, (304)
696-2350 or go to Old Main 107.
