1. Keep an eye on your valuables and your eyes open in general. Look for things out of the ordinary and for things which are missing from the ordinary.
2. Don't leave books and valuables unattended in the library, your room or your office.
3. Put valuables in a closed drawer and/or locked container or in the trunk where they cannot be seen. Don't forget to lock the back seat entrances to the trunk.
4. Keep valuables out of the line of sight and reach of windows and doors.
5. Use Project ID to register and engrave your valuables. Use numeric codes such as your name converted to the numbers from the phone key pad. Don't use your social security number, it gives too much information. You driver's license number also is not a good code to use.
6. Put your name, or code number, in your books inside the cover and on a special page.
7. Walk in groups at night. Know where you are going and walk confidently.
8. Park under a light. Keep car doors locked and windows up even when driving. Leave yourself enough space to pull out of traffic when driving or stopped.
9. Walk to and from your car and residence with your key ready to use to enter the door.
10. Keep your residence hall doors locked even when just going to the rest room.
11. Don't trust "friends of friends" like your friends.
12. Know your dates. Meet for lunch on first dates. Go separately. Always carry money for a cab and to make a phone call when you go anywhere.
13. Use Marshall University Police Officers for Escorts. Call 696-HELP.
14. Attend a crime prevention seminar from MUPD.
15. Be aware of what is going on around you.
16. Let people know when you are coming and have them watch for you.
17. When traveling or visiting, let people know when you arrive safely. They won't worry if you call and if you don't arrive, they can notify someone.
18. Don't do things you feel uncomfortable doing. You usually feel uncomfortable for a reason.
19. Don't loan friends your keys, Identification or Personal Identification Numbers or Passwords.
20. Take a crime prevention and self defense course.
