The Alpha Omega Chapter of the American Criminal Justice Association Lambda Alpha Epsilon is one of many student and professional chapters throughout the United States. The chapter, founded in 1986, is located in Region IV of the ACJALAE. The Alpha Omega Chapter is a recognized student organization at Marshall University and is housed in the Criminal Justice Department.
Membership in the chapter and organization is open to criminal justice majors, minors and professionals in the field. The purpose of the organization is to further professionalism in all areas of criminal justice. The emphasis of the ACJALAE journal, programs, conferences, presentations, workshops, and competitions is to improve and test the skills and knowledge of criminal justice professionals and students.
The members of the Alpha Omega Chapter are extremely busy. The Chapter, along with the Criminal Justice Department, Marshall University Office of Public Safety and the Student Government Association, sponsors the Marshall University Campus Watch, which is a volunteer organization which patrols the Marshall University Campus at night acting as the eyes and ears of the Marshall University Police Department and providing escorts and security for Marshall events. LAE members comprise a major portion of the Watch's members and supervisors. The AO Chapter also is involved with Branches, the Domestic Violence Shelter, presenting crime prevention programs, and competing at Regional and National Conferences.
Chapter members also compete individually and in teams at regional and national conferences in competitions which are divided into a Lower Student Division (generally freshmen and sophomores), Upper Student Division (Juniors and above) and Professional Division. The competitions involve the testing of professional knowledge and skills in Corrections, Crime Scene Investigation, Criminal Law, Firearms, Juvenile Justice, Law Enforcement Management, LAE Knowledge and Physical Agility, Besides competitions, the Regionals and Nationals include seminars. At the past few Regional and National Conferences the seminar subjects have included Serial Killers, Forensics, Forensic Anthropology, Serious Incident Management, Rural Law Enforcement and Ethics, Prisoners with Psychological Problems, Domestic Terrorism, Domestic Violence, and Privatization of Justice.
