Greetings to All:

I would really appreciate you sharing the information with your region chapters about the up coming National Conference, March 18-24, 2007 in Wilmington, Delaware.  I have attached two fliers for dissemination that outlines the varied activities that will be available for chapter members plus the diagram that will be on the back of the conference t-shirt.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at satchley@dtcc.edu or call me at 302-388-6637.

Dr. Henry Lee will be giving a six hour seminar on “Forensics:  The Real CSI” on Weds. March 21.  I have watched two of his presentations at Region IV conferences over the years and he is scientifically accurate, and engages the member audience well.  There will be two of his numerous books for sale during the conference, and Dr. Lee is more than happy to sign your book for members and take pictures.

ACTIVITIES IN ADDITION TO NORMAL CONFERENCE BUSINESS

1.     There will be a limited number of ride-a-longs available at registration on a first come, first served, sign-up basis with the Delaware State Police, New Castle County Police, and the Wilmington City Police.  Remember, no alcohol consumption that day or evening prior to climbing into the police cruiser.

2.     There will be tours of two of Delaware’s largest correctional institutions, The Howard R. Young Correctional Facility (Gander Hill), and the Delaware Correctional Center.  Each institution will allow two groups of about 15 persons each to tour their facilities.  There will be a sign-up sheet at registration along with DOC forms that will have to be filled out in order to go on the tour.

3.   Eastern State Penitentiary reservations are made as follows:

     Website      http://www.easternstate.com/

Private group tours are available during daylight hours for groups of 15          or more year-round.  Although group tours are available twelve months a year, cold weather can make winter and early spring tours a very chilling experience. We recommend group tours between March 1st and December 1st.  Groups of fewer than 15 may visit during our public hours and need no reservations.  All group tours must be scheduled at least one week in advance.  For more information, please contact Brett Bertolino, Assistant Program Director, at bb@EasternState.org or (215) 236-5111 x12.

4.     There will be a 48 passenger bus available on Thursday (free day), to transport chapter members who wish to visit New York City.  The bus will leave the hotel at 8am, drive to New York City, arriving about 10:15am to drop passengers.  The bus will return to the same address at 7 or 8 pm for the return trip to the hotel.  The cost will be $20-$25 per person, payable during registration on March 18th.  Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, Times Square, Carnegie Hall, Chinatown, Radio City Music Hall, Gound Zero are just a few of the many sites people enjoy.  Keep in mind that the lines at the Statue of Liberty are frequently 2-3 hours long so keep your sight seeing expectations realistic.

5.     Philadelphia is about 30 minutes away by automobile.  Possible sites of interest in Philly are the Philadelphia Art Museum, National Constitution Center, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia Zoo, Franklin Institute, and many others.

6.     Washington, DC is about two hours away by car.  Go early, stay late.  Choose your visit carefully, as you could easily spend a week there.

7.     Baltimore, Maryland’s Inner Harbor is about 90 minutes by automobile.

8.     There are also numerous local attractions that are known world wide.  Hagley Museum, Longwood Gardens, and my personal favorite, Winterthur are all within a short 30 minute drive.  You may visit their websites on line for more information.
