Enrollment Report - Dr. Riley discussed enrollment and told the Board that enrollment to date was 2,407 which is 14 higher than last year’s
enrollment of 2,393. This enrollment number breaks down into 1,046 part-time students and 1,361 full-time students. She informed the Board that our
goal is to increase enrollment in the part-time student base.
WV Council Update – Dr. Riley informed the Board that the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical Education is still working to
form organizations and committees within the community college system, as well as instituting new policies. One policy that will have an affect on
MCTC is a rule regarding degree designations and minimum education requirements. Currently a student obtaining a one year certificate is required
to have three hours of general education. The general education requirement is being changed to six hours and we are currently looking at different
options in order to meet this standard.
We are in compliance with all other new policies that have been put into place.
We have also been asked to broker an agreement, between the Council and the University, for the delivery of the two year degree programs in Nursing
and Medical Lab Technology.
IDEA – Dr. Riley informed the Board that MCTC has signed an agreement with the Institute for Development of Entrepreneurial Advances (IDEA) to
work with the College’s Small Business Development Center for training and development of new businesses. MCTC has assigned one business analyst to
work as part of the IDEA operations.
Advantage Valley Community College Network – Dr. Riley gave an update on activities involving the Advantage Valley Community College Network.
One activity is the search for a new Executive Director who will coordinate collaboration on projects involving MCTC, WV State and WVU Tech, as well
as identifying regional development needs.
The network is also trying to find a physical location which will serve as a location for the Executive Director and also have several computer labs,
etc. A location in the DOW complex is currently being considered.
Dr. Riley informed the Board that she is in the process of forming the Advantage Valley Consortia which is a requirement of Senate Bill 448. This
will involve all career centers, vocational-technical centers and comprehensive high schools within our service region. The organization meeting
of these consortia will be on November 8, 2004. A compact report will also have to be prepared by the consortia by November 15, 2004.
West Virginia Community College Association – Dr. Riley announced that the West Virginia Community College Association (WVCCA) will hold its
annual conference at Stonewall Resort November 4-5, 2004. MCTC has three faculty members who will be presenting at the conference. The representatives
are Susie Peyton, Mike McComas and Mildred Battle. Professor Battle was invited to present at the Oxford Round Table over the summer and she will be
sharing that same information at the conference.
Dean’s Activities – Dr. Riley informed the Board that Dr. Scherer presented at a national Tech Prep conference in Minneapolis earlier this
month, and is currently attending an ABET conference in Nashville. ABET is the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
