Board of Advisors� Meeting
October 30, 2002 7:30 a.m.
MCTC Conference Room

Members present: Ms. Betty Dennison, Ms. Billie Henderson, Mr. Matthew Maynard, Ms. Mary Jo Miller, Mr. Alan Modliszewski, Ms. Susan Richardson, Mr. William Smith and Mr. Jerry Vest.

Members absent: Mr. Jack Klim, Mr. Brent Marsteller, Mr. Gerald McDonald, Ms. Gail Staples, Ms. Charlotte Weber, Mr. Jason Moses.

Also attending: Dr. Vicki Riley, Dr. Judy Scherer and Mr. Jim Skidmore.

The meeting was called to order by Interim Chair William Smith. It was moved by Ms. Mary Jo Miller, seconded by Mr. Alan Modliszewski, to approve the minutes of the previous board meeting. Motion carried to approve minutes as written.

AGENDA ITEMS

I. Swearing in Ceremony

The Oath of Office was administered to the Board members by Mr. Skidmore. A certificate was then signed by each Board member present and will remain on file in the Provost�s office.

II. Presentation by Jim Skidmore, Vice Chancellor for Community & Technical College Education/Workforce Development, Higher Education Policy Commission

After introduction by Dr. Riley, Mr. Skidmore expressed his appreciation to the Board members for giving their time to serve the college in this manner. He then gave an overview of the mission and direction of the West Virginia community college system. A question/answer session followed the presentation. Mr. Skidmore expressed that one of the most important roles for board members was to share information about the community college with others.

III. Compact Narrative � Draft

Dr. Riley explained the Compact Narrative and Master Plan requirements of the state. The Compact Narrative is an annual report of progress to date. It was moved by Ms. Miller, seconded by Ms. Henderson, to approve the Compact Narrative.

IV. Accreditation Update

Dr. Riley gave the Board an update on the accreditation process. She informed the group that the Self-Study document was nearing completion. Although no final date has been set for a visit by NCA, we are hoping for a visit in March, 2003.

V. Legislative Update

Dr. Riley gave the Board an update on possible legislation affecting the community colleges. A discussion was also held about the impending budget cuts and how the college would deal with these cuts, if necessary.

VI. Other Items

Dr. Riley informed the group that John Mandt had resigned from the Board due to scheduling conflicts. Suggestions for a replacement should be directed to Dr. Riley

Dr. Riley informed the group of several on-site happenings:

- WVADE conference on November 1

- Physical Therapy Assistant accreditation visit in mid-November

- Next meeting of the Board is February 26, 2003

VII. Adjournment

With no further business, the meeting was adjourned upon motion by Ms. Miller, seconded by Mr. Vest.
