PARAMEDIC SCIENCE
The Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-Paramedic) is a specialist in the pre-hospital care of the
sick and injured. This person bridges the gap between the emergency room physician and the critical patient
in the out-of-hospital setting. Paramedics provide emergency medical treatment and stabilization, rescue of
persons entrapped in life-threatening situations, transportation of critical patients to specialized treatment
facilities, support and assistance to fire and law enforcement agencies, and public education and safety
training to target populations.

Program Description
The student completing an Associate in Applied Science Paramedic degree will have a much greater depth and
breadth of knowledge than paramedics simply completing a certification program. These individuals will have
a distinct advantage by graduating with courses in Critical Care Transportation, Rescue Extrication, and other
areas not normally covered in the paramedic certification curriculum. These graduates will be better prepared
to enter the workforce and progress to competitive job markets and management positions.
The EMT-Paramedic Associate Degree program is an intense program designed for individuals involved in both
career and volunteer aspects of the EMS realm. The program consists of classroom lecture, practical labs, and
approximately 400 hours of clinical internships, as well as core courses and EMS courses specifically designed
for EMS professionals. By West Virginia state law, students must successfully pass the National Registry of Emergency
Medical Technicians Paramedic Examination process before being certified to work as an EMT-Paramedic. Students
may be eligible to take this exam after the completion of the core classes for the Paramedic Certificate
Program.
