Instructor Position Description:
Marshall Community & Technical College – Railroad Conductor Program is expanding each year and we are always looking for experienced railroad conductors, engineers and officers from Class 1 railroads to be instructors for the Railroad Conductor Training Program. The training center is located in Huntington, WV. The training will consist of instructors directing a five week class for eight hour a day (M-F) with classroom lecture and hands on training in a static yard. Instructors will teach the new hire conductor trainees a variety of tasks which include: introduction to railroading safety, operating rules, signals, equipment, and other topics essential for success as a conductor. Students are also taught to mounting/dismounting equipment, ascend/descend ladders, apply high hand brake, crossover equipment, remove/install air hose, couple/uncouple air hose, remove/install knuckle, operate low and bow handle switches, hold onto side of car for four minutes, give hand signals, install/remove E.O.T, and work order system. Candidates must have: at least three years’ experience as a conductor, engineer, trainmaster, or road foreman of engines, not be an active employee for a railroad, have an excellent safety and attendance record, have a thorough working knowledge of railroad operations, extensive knowledge of operating, safety, HAZMAT, and equipment handling rules, ability and willingness to work with others, physical ability to complete all required tasks, and excellent oral and written communication skills. Instructors will be paid a daily rate as well as travel related expenses (if outside reasonable driving area). For those on limited income, you can start a corporation so that you are not penalized for income associated with being an instructor. All income is paid to your corporation and not in your name; therefore, it does not affect your railroad retirement benefits. The paperwork necessary to create a corporation is different for each state, contact a local accountant or lawyer for more information.
