Deckhand Basic Training Program
This course is designed for personnel who have never worked on the Inland Waterways. It
is designed to give the student a taste of what life on the river is like, both the good
points and the bad points, and to give those personnel who decide that the isolation of a
riverman’s life is not desirable an opportunity to leave the industry before they or the
company that hires them expends too many resources. Also, the course is designed to
familiarize the new deckhand with the unique jargon of the waterways trade, acquaint the
new deckhand with some of the tools and equipment that are used in the trade, and to
teach some basic waterways skills. Finally, the course is designed to instill both a
sense of professionalism in the new deckhand and to emphasize safe working practices in
the marine environment.
The MCTC is fully accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and is
a member of Advantage Valey.
