They Came, They Saw, They Looked Ahead

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Open House on March 5 to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Center for Teaching and Learning. Over 80 faculty members stopped by during drop-in hours all afternoon and enjoyed food, conversation, prizes, and several interactive art installations.

The CTL staff would also like to congratulate the winners of our Open House door prizes:

  • iPad mini: Jeremy Watts (Education/College of Education and Professional Development)
  • Keurig Brewer: Lina Xiong (Mgmt&Marketing/Lewis College of Business)
  • MU Bookstore $100 gift card: Mary Welch (English/College of Liberal Arts)
  • Starbucks $50 gift card: John Sammons (IST/College of Science)

The theme of the open house was Visual Thinking and Learning, and faculty were asked to see things a little differently. One exhibit challenged faculty to discover the larger pattern in a sea of pixelated post-it notes. Another expressed the vision and mission of CTL through an intricate white board concept map (thank you to the artist, Nikos Karabetsos, graduate student and TA in the School of Art & Design). Faculty also contributed their own philosophies of learning, teaching and working in academe by creating their own “dinosaur comics.”  See images below.

Stay tuned for new initiatives coming out of CTL, including the $5,000 Hedrick Faculty Fellowship, a one-day workshop on course design on May 29th led by Dee Fink (author of Creating Significant Learning Experiences), and additional Faculty Learning Communities (FLCs) for AY 2014-15 on Visual Learning/Thinking and Problem Based Learning. Also coming up: the Charles Lloyd Writing Across the Curriculum Symposium in April and May, the 6th Annual iPED: Inquiring Pedagogies Fall Teaching Conference on August 19th, and the Service Learning Symposium and Student Showcase in September.
