DIETETICS
Bachelor of Science Dietetics is a creative and challenging profession which relates food intake to nutritional well-being. The Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) at Marshall University leads to a Bachelor of Science degree and prepares students to work in clinical nutrition, community health, and food service management positions. The DPD is approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education of the American Dietetic Association and meets the academic standards to qualify students for a dietetic internship (DI). Students must complete both an undergraduate DPD and a post baccalaureate supervised practice experience to be eligible to take the national Registered Dietitian examination.
Mission Statement:
The Department of Dietetics strives to deliver the highest quality dietetic education utilizing all available resources to meet the needs of this rural region for dietetics professionals. The DPD’s mission is to provide the depth and breadth of food and nutrition knowledge and skills that prepare students to enter a supervised practice program in dietetics.
Program Goals and Outcome Measures:
Goal 1: To encourage, motivate, and support
students to complete the DPD
Goal 2: Provide graduates with knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to successfully compete for dietetic internship positions.
Goal 3: Provide graduates with knowledge,
skills, and competencies necessary to successfully complete a dietetic
internship. · 90% of DPD graduates participating in dietetic internships will respond either strongly agree or agree that the program prepared them for the internship. · 90% of Dietetic Internship Directors will rate DPD graduates satisfactory or higher with regard to overall academic preparation supervised practice. · 90% of Dietetic Internship Directors will rate DPD graduates as about the same or better prepared when compared to students from other programs.
Goal 4: Adequately prepare graduates to
pass the Registration Examination.
Goal 5: Adequately prepare graduates to
pursue individual interests in nutrition and dietetics.
Admission Application: Entry to the Didactic Program in Dietetics involves formal application by candidates. Application forms are available from the DPD Director's Office. Students may submit their Application Form for Admission to the Didactic Program Director. Prior to admission to the Didactic Program in Dietetics, students interested in the major can enroll in Pre-Dietetics. Some hospitals/physician offices may require a current tuberculosis test be on file for students participating in activities in those facilities. The cost of a TB test varies and is the student’s responsibility. TB tests are given at the Cabell Huntington Health Department free of charge (703 7th Avenue) for Cabell County resident and at a minimal charge for non-residents.
