Reasonable Accommodations

According to the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 Reasonable Accommodations (for educational settings) means making appropriate adjustments or modifications of examinations, training materials or policies; the provision of qualified readers or interpreters and other similar accommodations for individuals with disabilities.

Marshall University's Disabled Student Services Offices recognizes the following as reasonable accommodations:

  • Extended test time - time and a half to double time (with instructor approval)

  • Preferential seating

  • Table & chair rather than desk

  • Notetakers

  • Interpreters

  • Readers for test questions

  • Scribes for tests for Learning Disabled, Visually Impaired, and Physically Impaired students

  • Course Substitution

  • Separate, quiet room

  • Tape record class

  • Tutor

  • Early registration

  • Single room

  • Medical withdrawal

In order to receive an academic accommodation, a student should provide documentation to the Disabled Student Services Office, the HELP Program, and/or the Student Athlete Program Offices.  This office will then notify the professor of the recommended reasonable accommodation.  Although a professor may provide an accommodation if they choose, consulting any of the above offices is recommended.
