Celebration of the Constitution Week 2005 |
|
In
compliance with language inserted by Senator Robert C. Byrd
into a 2005 federal spending bill requiring educational
institutions that receive federal funds to hold programs
about the United States Constitution on or near the
September 17th anniversary of the document’s signing,
Marshall University held its first annual “Celebration of
the Constitution Week.” The program, running from September
19 to September 22, 2005 included a number of activities
held on campus for the edification and entertainment of both
the university population and the local community. |

• A panel discussion with the West Virginia Supreme Court of
Appeals Justices held on Monday, September 19 at 4:00 p.m.
in the Frances-Booth Experimental Theater. The event was
moderated by Federal District Judge Robert C. Chambers and
welcome was given by Mr. Menis Ketchum, local attorney and
Chair of the Marshall University Board of Governors. The
Justices in attendance were: Chief Justice Joseph P.
Albright,The Honorable Robin Jean Davis, The Honorable Larry
V. Starcher, The Honorable Elliott Maynard, and the
Honorable Brent D. Benjamin. The event was followed by an
open reception honoring the Justices held in the Theater
Lobby. |

• A regularly scheduled fall argument docket session of the
West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals held on Tuesday,
September 20th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Joan C.
Edwards Playhouse. During the session, arguments were
presented on several important cases including the unusual
circumstance of people suing lawyers and issues such as
taxation, health care and land-use planning. |

• A luncheon immediately following the court session held in
honor of the Justices in the Frances-Booth Experimental
Theater. The event was hosted by the Drinko Academy and the
West Virginia Bar Association. Sponsors of the luncheon

P.L.L.C.; Farrell, Farrell and Farrell, L.C.; Huddleston
Bolen, L.L.P.; Jenkins Fenstermaker, P.L.L.C.; Kenneth P.

• A special Birthday Party held on September 22, at 12:00
p.m. celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the birth of John
Marshall. A birthday cake, measuring 4’ by 8’, was
ceremonially cut by President Stephen Kopp and Student
Association Vice President Nikki Brown. The party was held
on the plaza in front of the Memorial Student Center.

• A 250th Anniversary Celebration banquet honoring John
Marshall was held in the Frances-Booth Experimental Theater.
Professor Jean Edward Smith, the keynote speaker, addressed
the audience on the topic: “A Profile of the Great Chief
Justice”. The program was sponsored by the Drinko Academy,
the Office of the President and the United States Supreme
Court Historical Society. |
