Dr. Riddel joined the Marshall faculty in 1983 and retired as a Full Professor of Spanish in May, 2011. She is also a former Chair of the Department of Modern Languages. She served as the supervisor of the departmental Study Abroad Program in France and in Spain and as the faculty advisor and Director of the Summer Language and Culture Program in Madrid. Maria
Carmen is also the recipient of the Hendrick Outstanding Faculty
Award in 2011 and she was one of five state-wide finalists for the
Prestigious Professor of the Year Award given by the Faculty Merit
Foundation of West Virginia.

Maria Carmen was born and raised in Madrid, Spain and is a graduate of Colezio Estudio of that city.
She is also an alumni of Marshall University receiving a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, in Spanish education and library science in 1975. Professor Riddel then received a master’s degree in 1977 from the Universidad de Salamanca. She completed her formal education by earning the Ph.D. in 1988 fromThe Ohio State University.
In 1983, Dr. Riddel joined the Marshall faculty as an Assistant Professor of Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages. She became a Full Professor in 1995 and from the Fall of 2002 until her retirement in 2011 she served as the chair of the department.
Even a cursory review of her vita reveals an extraordinarily active professional career. In addition to her years of service as a member of numerous college and university committees and her highly acclaimed teaching abilities, she has been productively active as a researcher, writer and consultant in her fields of expertise.
Our Drinko scholar’s impressive research activities include two books which deal with the topics of liberal education in Spain and feminist writers in post war Spain. She is also the author of an impressive list of national and international publications, scholarly articles and translations. Additionally, she has presented professional papers at numerous and prestigious conferences held in both Spain and the United States.
Among her varied contributions to our students and faculty are her highly successful directorship of Marshall University’s Spanish Language and Culture Program held in Madrid, Spain for the last twenty years and her organization of campus programs dealing with Hispanic Culture awareness including the hosting of one of our most distinguished John Deaver Drinko Visiting Professors– Dr. Ginor Rojo of Santiago, Chile.
