Born in Wisconsin and raised in Mississippi, it might seem surprising that alum Amber Wright ended up at Marshall. After spending her undergrad as a member of the “Fighting Okra” at Delta State in Cleveland, Mississippi, she worked at the Current Delta Business Journal for two years before taking a temp position at Marshall in January 2014. On a whim, she took the GRE later that summer and applied for our graduate program.

Amber graduated with her masters in English, specializing in creative nonfiction, in 2016. Now, she teaches at St Joseph Central Catholic High School here in Huntington.

If she’s not teaching, you can find her running or hiking with her golden retriever, Crosby, and her fiancĂ© Chad, who works at Marshall’s recreation center.

Her advice to undergrads? Don’t be too hard on yourself and have fun, and value the importance of relationships with your professors. They really helped her, not just academically, but personally. She says she wouldn’t have made it without them.

We are so glad she chose us.
