WELCOME to Family and Consumer Sciences, an exciting field of study that applies knowledge
and skills to address basic human needs and issues relevant to the well-being of individuals,
families, consumers, and communities. The mission is to improve the well-being of the family through programs
that educate, influence public policy, and help families put research-based knowledge to work for quality life.
Family and Consumer Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Masters of Art (MA) degree program.
Each degree prepares students for many career opportunities. Graduates may find employment in fashion retail industry,
foodservice, hotel and lodging, consumer agencies, extension and family services, education, and entrepreneurship.
Family and Consumer Sciences at Marshall University has joined has with community colleges to offer 2+2 Program
that allow students with associate degree in Hospitality Management to complete a BA in Family and Consumer Sciences.
This is a new opportunity that is expected to expand and grow over the coming years.
The FCS program at Marshall University offers both intellectual and practical “hands-on” learning experiences.
Courses keep current with developments in the field of family and consumer sciences. Internships (placement in West
Virginia or any place in USA) and study tours (New York or Paris) allow students to explore career opportunities.
Small class sizes enable faculty and students to work closely to ensure student success.
Students use cutting-edge technologies that enhance their learning experience and are applicable to the workplaces.
For example, the FCS program has computer-aided-design software, which enables students to learn how to design, develop,
and use patterns for apparel production.
